When Jenny and Keanua set out on the 500km cycle challenge across Malawi for our charity partner African Vision Malawi, they knew it would be an adventure to remember. After experiencing the spectacular countryside and the thrills (and spills!) of nearly two weeks in the saddle, the Gandys Girls visited the Funsani Preschool, where they met a very special boy indeed.
A Boy with an Incredible Journey
Manuel’s story is nothing short of remarkable. Orphaned as a baby, he joined our preschool in Malawi at the tender age of three. He was unable to speak, with significant developmental and learning disabilities.
Fast forward four years, and Manuel is now not only speaking but joyfully reciting numbers and letters. He has a passion for learning, backed up by infectious enthusiasm.
A Morning Full of Joy and Learning
Jenny and Keanua met Manuel during breakfast at Funsani, an essential nutritious meal that sets up the kids for the day. They recognised him instantly from photographs Gandys founder Paul had shared from a previous visit. Manuel’s progress since Paul’s visit was clear to see, and his warm, tactile nature was underlined with a few hugs for Jenny!
After breakfast, Manuel and his friends played on the school’s slide and swing set, and the fun continued as the children performed songs and dances for their visitors, showcasing their talents and the happiness that a normal school life and friends can bring.
A Humble Home
Manuel then led Jenny and Keanua to a small hut near the school that he shares with his grandmother. It may be humble but it’s home, and this, combined with the amazing support of the pre-school, shows how Gandys and our wonderful customers are helping to turn life around for kids like Manuel, who just needed a fair chance at a better life.
