WORLD PHOTO DAY

Photographer

My name is Amber and i’m a 26 year old photographer residing in San Diego, CA. I was born and raised in Wisconsin but have been on the west coast for 8 years now. Outside of photography, i enjoy surfing, hiking, camping, cooking, tennis, painting, weightlifting and rollerblading.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO DO PHOTOGRAPHY AS A CAREER?

For me I don’t think there was a specific moment that I realized I wanted to be a photographer, I’ve loved being in front of and behind the camera for as long as I remember, with my first camera being actually polaroid camera I got when I was 4.

I started to take it more seriously a few years ago when I was going through some personal things and I did a solo trip to Yosemite for some soul searching. I brought my camera and I was hooked on creating images that evoked the emotions I felt when i first saw the sunset at Yosemite for the first time.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER?

I think a great photographer stays true to their style and captures their version of what they see. I think it’s also good to always keep an open mind and try to be creative even if the conditions don’t turn out the way you expect. It’s important to not have tunnel vision on specific shots you want to get, because that could block your view on more unique creative shots that maybe haven’t been done before or you wouldn’t have thought of if you’re too focused on one specific shot.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD TO HAVE A PHOTOSHOOT?

I’m sure there would be many places that would take over as my favourite place to shoot given the opportunity. But out of the places I've been, Grand Teton National Park and Yosemite national park would be tied for my favourite place to have a photo shoot.

WHAT DOES DON'T JUST EXIST MEAN TO YOU?

“Don’t just exist” to me means to get out and live your life. It’s so easy to go through your day and just go through the motions and always stick to a routine. I think it’s important to try new things and have different experiences to really get the most out of life.

This is meaningful to me because a lot of people i know, especially from my hometown in Wisconsin, settle down and get married at 25 and start having kids and get very comfortable and settled in to their lives. It has always been important to me to be different from that and have adventures and incredible experiences, which is ultimately what brought me out to the west coast.
